Virtual colonoscopy involves gently filling the colon with air, and obtaining 300-400 thin section images with an electron beam CT scanner (EBCT), which acquires images quickly, eliminating motion. The data is then post-processed on an independent computer station giving an opaque image of the colon. This image can be cut, turned and viewed from multiple angles and even from inside.
Unlike conventional colonoscopy, no sedation is needed, and no scope is used. Patient comfort is improved. Information can be obtained about the wall and external portion of the colon as well. Ask your physician if screening virtual colonoscopy is for you.
